इससे पहले मिगुएल बोर्जा ने कोलंबिया की तरफ से दूसरे हाफ के इंजुरी टाइम के आखिरी सेकेंड में गोल करके अर्जेंटीना की जीत की उम्मीदों पर पानी फेरा। यह दक्षिण अमेरिकी क्वालीफाईंग के सर्वश्रेष्ठ मैचों में एक था। बरानक्विला के मेट्रोपोलिटन स्टेडियम में इस मैच को देखने के लिये 10,000 दर्शक उपस्थित थे।
दक्षिण अमेरिकी क्वालीफायर्स से चार टीमें स्वत: ही कतर में 2022 में होने वाले विश्व कप में जगह बनाएंगी जबकि पांचवें स्थान की टीम अंतरमहाद्वीपीय प्लेआफ में भाग लेगी। अभी ब्राजील 10 टीमों की प्रतियोगिता में 18 अंक लेकर शीर्ष पर है। उसके बाद अर्जेंटीना (12), इक्वाडोर (नौ) उरुग्वे और कोलंबिया (दोनों आठ) का नंबर आता है। उरूग्वे और नौवें स्थान के वेनेजुएला के बीच मैच गोलरहित बराबरी पर छूटा। पेरू ने एक अन्य मैच में इक्वाडोर को 2-1 से हराया। पेरू की यह इस बार के विश्व कप क्वालीफायर्स में पहली जीत है।
