हॉकी में दो बार के ओलंपिक स्वर्ण पदक विजेता केशव दत्त का बुधवार को उम्र संबंधी बीमारियों के कारण निधन हो गया। दत्त 95 वर्ष के थे। पूर्व सेंटर हाफबैक का कोलकाता के संतोषपुर स्थित आवास पर लगभग 12.30 बजे निधन हो गया। दत्त हॉकी में भारत के स्वर्ण युग का हिस्सा थे।

एक शानदार हाफबैक, वह 1948 के ओलंपिक में भारत की ऐतिहासिक उपलब्धि का हिस्सा थे, जहां उन्होंने लंदन के वेम्बली स्टेडियम में घरेलू टीम ब्रिटेन को 4-0 से हराकर स्वतंत्रता के बाद पहला स्वर्ण पदक जीता था। 1948 के ओलंपिक से पहले, दत्त ने 1947 में हॉकी के जादूगर मेजर ध्यानचंद के नेतृत्व में पूर्वी अफ्रीका का दौरा किया था। 29 दिसंबर, 1925 को लाहौर में जन्मे दत्त 1952 के हेलसिंकी खेलों में भारतीय टीम का भी हिस्सा थे, जहां उन्होंने नीदरलैंड को 6-1 से हराकर लगातार पांचवीं बार ओलंपिक चैंपियन बने।
हॉकी इंडिया के अध्यक्ष ज्ञानेंद्रो निंगोमबम ने कहा, “हम सभी आज सुबह महान हाफबैक केशव दत्त के निधन के बारे में सुनकर बहुत दुखी हैं। वह 1948 और 1952 के ओलंपिक खेलों के एकमात्र जीवित सदस्य थे और आज वास्तव में एक युग के अंत की तरह महसूस कर रहे हैं।
“हम सभी ओलंपिक में स्वतंत्र भारत के लिए उनकी यादगार यात्राओं की अविश्वसनीय कहानियों को सुनकर बड़े हुए हैं और उन्होंने देश में हॉकी खिलाड़ियों की पीढ़ियों को प्रेरित किया है।
बनर्जी ने ट्वीट कर कहा कि “हॉकी इंडिया ने उनके निधन पर शोक व्यक्त किया और फेडरेशन की ओर से मैं उनके परिवार के प्रति अपनी गहरी संवेदना व्यक्त करता हूं।”पश्चिम बंगाल की मुख्यमंत्री ममता बनर्जी ने भी शोक व्यक्त किया। “हॉकी की दुनिया ने आज अपने एक सच्चे दिग्गज को खो दिया। केशव दत्त के निधन से दुखी। वह 1948 और 1952 में दोहरा ओलंपिक स्वर्ण पदक विजेता थे। भारत और बंगाल के चैंपियन। उनके परिवार और दोस्तों के प्रति संवेदना।” ।
