यहां रेशम और चंदन की लकड़ी और सुगंधित धूप प्रसिद्ध है। मैसूर अपने सुविधाजनक आकार और अच्छे मौसम के कारण एक बड़ा पर्यटक स्थल बन गया है, इस विरासत को सुंदर व सुरक्षित बनाए रखने पर खास ध्यान दिया गया है। राजा वोडेयार का निवास रह चुका मैसूर का महल भारत में भव्य महलों में से एक है।
यहां सारसैनिक शैली में गुम्बदों, प्राचीरों, आर्च तथा कोलोनेड के साथ बनाया गया महल अपनी भव्यता के कारण ब्रिटेन के बकिंघम पैलेस के साथ तुलना की जाती है। मद्रास राज्य के ब्रिटिश परामर्श दाता वास्तुकार हेनरी इरविन ने इसे डिजाइन किया। इस महल का निर्माण पुराने लकड़ी के महल के स्थान पर 1912 में वोडेयार के 24वें राजा द्वारा कराया गया था, जो वर्ष 1897 में टूट गया था। अब इस महल को संग्रहालय में बदल दिया गया है, जिसमें स्मृति चिन्ह, तस्वीरें, आभूषण, शाही परिधान और अन्य सामान रखे गए हैं, एक समय जो वोडेयार शासकों के पास होते थे। महल में सोने के आभूषणों का सबसे बड़ा संग्रह प्रदर्शित किया गया है।
शाही हाथी का सोने का हौज़, दीवाने आम दीवाने खास , दरबार हॉल, कल्याण मंडप यहां के मुख्य आकर्षण हैं। महल में प्रवेश का रास्ता एक सुंदर दीर्घा से होकर गुजरता है जिसमें भारतीय तथा यूरोपीय शिल्पकला और सजावटी वस्तुएं हैं। हाथी द्वार इसकी आधी दूरी पर है, जो महल के केन्द्र का मुख्य प्रवेश द्वार है। प्रवेश द्वार के उत्तर में शाही हाथी हौज प्रदर्शित किया गया है जो 24 कैरिट स्वर्ण के 84 किलो ग्राम से बना है।
कल्याण मंडप की ओर जाने वाली दीवारों पर सुंदर तैल चित्र लगे हुए हैं जिनमें मैसूर के दशहरा त्यौहार के शाही जुलूस को चित्रित किया गया है। इन तस्वीरों के बारे में एक विशिष्ट बात यह है कि इसे किसी भी दिशा से देखा जा सकता है ऐसा लगता है कि यह जुलूस आप ही की दिशा में आ रहा है। यह हॉल अपने आप में अत्यंत भव्य है और इसमें विशाल झूमरों और कई रंगों वाले कांच को मोर के आकार में सजाकर बनाए गए डिज़ाइन से सजाया गया है।
महल के ऐतिहासिक दरबार हॉल में ऊंची छत और शिल्पकारी से बने खम्भे हैं जिन्हें सोने से लेपित किया गया है। यहां कुछ प्रतिष्ठित कलाकारों द्वारा बनाई गई दुर्लभ तस्वीरों का खजाना भी है। यह हॉल जो सीढियों के ऊपर है, यहां से चामुंडी पहाड़ी का मनोरम दृश्य दिखाई देता है, जो शहर के ऊपर है और यहां शाही परिवार की संरक्षक देवी, चामुंडेश्वरी देवी को समर्पित एक मंदिर है। यह महल परिवार की शाम और त्यौहारों के अवसर पर भव्य तथा सुंदर दिखाई देता है बताते हैं कि उस वक्त हजारों बल्बों से रोशन किया जाता है।
