तेल की कीमतों पर आंतरिक चर्चा की जानकारी रखने वाले एक वरिष्ठ सरकारी अधिकारी के हवाले से रॉयटर्स ने कहा, “7 मार्च को चुनाव खत्म होने के बाद तेल कंपनियां चरणबद्ध तरीके से कीमतें बढ़ाने के लिए स्वतंत्र होंगी। पिछले साल 4 नवंबर के बाद से ईंधन की कीमतें नहीं बढ़ाई गई हैं। भारत सरकार ने दिवाली की पूर्व संध्या पर पेट्रोल और डीजल पर केंद्रीय उत्पाद शुल्क में क्रमशः 5 रुपये और 10 रुपये की कमी की घोषणा की थी।
यह कदम सबसे अधिक आबादी वाले उत्तर प्रदेश सहित पांच राज्यों में महत्वपूर्ण विधानसभा चुनावों के मद्देनजर उठाया गया था। 24 फरवरी को, यूक्रेन पर रूस के आक्रमण के बाद तेल की कीमतों में उछाल आया। ब्रेंट 116 डॉलर प्रति बैरल से ऊपर चढ़ गया, जबकि आपूर्ति में व्यवधान ने वैश्विक कीमतों को प्रभावित किया है, जिससे COVID आर्थिक सुधार के बाद एक बड़ा झटका लगा है।
रॉयटर्स ने एक दूसरे अधिकारी के हवाले से बताया कि तेल कंपनियों ने केंद्र सरकार से कहा है कि उन्हें पेट्रोल और डीजल के लिए 10-12 रुपये प्रति लीटर की कीमत बढ़ाने की जरूरत है। रिपोर्ट के अनुसार, एक अन्य वरिष्ठ सरकारी अधिकारी ने कहा कि राज्य के राजस्व पर इसके प्रभाव को देखते हुए, कम से कम वित्तीय वर्ष के 31 मार्च के अंत से पहले सरकार को झटका कम करने के लिए ईंधन करों में कटौती की संभावना नहीं थी।
