गणेश: भगवान शिव की पहली पत्नी सती थीं, जो आग में जलकर भस्म हो गई थीं। उन्हीं सती ने जब दूसरा जन्म पार्वती के रूप में लिया तब उन्होंने भगवान शिव को प्राप्त करने के लिए तपस्या की। शिवजी ने प्रसन्न होकर उनकी मनोकामना पूर्ण की और उनसे विवाह किया। पुराणों में गणेशजी की उत्पत्ति की विरोधाभासी कथाएं मिलती हैं। भाद्रपद शुक्ल चतुर्थी को मध्याह्न के समय गणेशजी का जन्म हुआ था।
पहली कथा: एक कथा के अनुसार शनि की दृष्टि पड़ने से शिशु गणेश का सिर जलकर भस्म हो गया। इस पर दुःखी पार्वती (सती नहीं) से ब्रह्मा ने कहा- जिसका सिर सर्वप्रथम मिले उसे गणेश के सिर पर लगा दो। पहला सिर हाथी के बच्चे का ही मिला। इस प्रकार गणेश गजानन बन गए।
दूसरी कथा के अनुसार गणेश को द्वार पर बिठाकर पार्वतीजी स्नान करने लगीं। इतने में शिव आए और पार्वती के भवन में प्रवेश करने लगे। गणेश ने जब उन्हें रोका तो क्रुद्ध शिव ने उनका सिर काट दिया। इन गणेश की उत्पत्ति पार्वतीजी ने चंदन के मिश्रण से की थी। जब पार्वतीजी ने देखा कि उनके बेटे का सिर काट दिया गया तो वे क्रोधित हो उठीं। उनके क्रोध को शांत करने के लिए भगवान शिव ने एक हाथी के बच्चे का सिर गणेशजी के सिर पर लगा दिया और वह जी उठा।
कार्तिकेय: शिव के दूसरे पुत्र कार्तिकेय को सुब्रमण्यम, मुरुगन और स्कंद भी कहा जाता है। उनके जन्म की कथा भी विचित्र है। कार्तिकेय की पूजा मुख्यतः दक्षिण भारत में होती है। अरब में यजीदी जाति के लोग भी इन्हें पूजते हैं, ये उनके प्रमुख देवता हैं। उत्तरी ध्रुव के निकटवर्ती प्रदेश उत्तर कुरु के क्षेत्र विशेष में ही इन्होंने स्कंद नाम से शासन किया था। इनके नाम पर ही स्कंद पुराण है।
पहली कथा: जब पिता दक्ष के यज्ञ में भगवान शिव की पत्नी सती कूदकर भस्म हो गईं, तब शिवजी विलाप करते हुए गहरी तपस्या में लीन हो गए। उनके ऐसा करने से सृष्टि शक्तिहीन हो गई। इस मौके का फायदा दैत्य उठा कर धरती पर तारकासुर नामक दैत्य का चारों ओर आतंक फैल गया। देवताओं को पराजय का सामना करना पड़ा। चारों तरफ हाहाकार मच गया तब सभी देवता ब्रह्माजी से प्रार्थना करने लगे तब ब्रह्माजी ने कहा कि तारक का अंत शिव पुत्र करेगा।
इंद्र और अन्य देव भगवान शिव के पास गए, तब भगवान शंकर पार्वती के अपने प्रति अनुराग की परीक्षा लेते हैं और पार्वती की तपस्या से प्रसन्न होते हैं और इस तरह शुभ घड़ी और शुभ मुहूर्त में शिवजी और पार्वती का विवाह हो जाता है। इस प्रकार कार्तिकेय का जन्म होता है। कार्तिकेय तारकासुर का वध करके देवों को उनका स्थान प्रदान करते हैं। पुराणों के अनुसार षष्ठी तिथि को कार्तिकेय भगवान का जन्म हुआ था इसलिए इस दिन उनकी पूजा का विशेष महत्व है।
दूसरी कथा: लेकिन एक दूसरी कथा के अनुसार कार्तिकेय का जन्म 6 अप्सराओं के 6 अलग-अलग गर्भों से हुआ था और फिर वे 6 अलग-अलग शरीर एक में ही मिल गए थे।
सुकेश: शिव का एक तीसरा पुत्र था जिसका नाम था सुकेश। राक्षसों का प्रतिनिधित्व दोनों लोगों को सौंपा गया- हेति और प्रहेति। ये दोनों भाई थे। ये दोनों भी दैत्यों के प्रतिनिधि मधु और कैटभ के समान ही बलशाली और पराक्रमी थे। प्रहेति धर्मात्मा था तो हेति को राजपाट और राजनीति में ज्यादा रुचि थी। राक्षसराज हेति ने अपने साम्राज्य विस्तार हेतु काल की पुत्री भया से विवाह किया। भया से उसके विद्युत्केश नामक एक पुत्र का जन्म हुआ।
विद्युत्केश का विवाह संध्या की पुत्री सालकटंकटा से हुआ। माना जाता है कि सालकटंकटा व्यभिचारिणी थी। इस कारण जब उसका पुत्र जन्मा तो उसे लावारिस छोड़ दिया गया। विद्युत्केश ने भी उस पुत्र की यह जानकर कोई परवाह नहीं की कि यह न मालूम किसका पुत्र है। पुराणों के अनुसार भगवान शिव और मां पार्वती की उस अनाथ बालक पर नजर पड़ी और उन्होंने उसको सुरक्षा प्रदान की। इसका नाम उन्होंने सुकेश रखा। सुकेश ने गंधर्व कन्या देववती से विवाह किया। देववती से सुकेश के 3 पुत्र हुए- 1. माल्यवान, 2. सुमाली और 3. माली। इन तीनों के कारण राक्षस जाति को विस्तार और प्रसिद्धि प्राप्त हुई।
जलंधर: शिवजी का एक चैथा पुत्र था जिसका नाम था जलंधर। जलंधर शिव का सबसे बड़ा दुश्मन बना। श्रीमद्मदेवी भागवत पुराण के अनुसार जलंधर असुर शिव का अंश था, लेकिन उसे इसका पता नहीं था। जलंधर बहुत ही शक्तिशाली असुर था। इंद्र को पराजित कर जलंधर तीनों लोकों का स्वामी बन बैठा था। यमराज भी उससे डरते थे।
श्रीमद्मदेवी भागवत पुराण के अनुसार एक बार भगवान शिव ने अपना तेज समुद्र में फेंक दिया इससे जलंधर उत्पन्न हुआ। माना जाता है कि जलंधर में अपार शक्ति थी और उसकी शक्ति का कारण थी उसकी पत्नी वृंदा। वृंदा के पतिव्रत धर्म के कारण सभी देवी-देवता मिलकर भी जलंधर को पराजित नहीं कर पा रहे थे। जलंधर को इससे अपने शक्तिशाली होने का अभिमान हो गया और वह वृंदा के पतिव्रत धर्म की अवहेलना करके देवताओं के विरुद्ध कार्य कर उनकी स्त्रियों को सताने लगा।
जलंधर को मालूम था कि ब्रह्मांड में सबसे शक्तिशाली कोई है तो वे हैं देवों के देव महादेव। जलंधर ने खुद को सर्वशक्तिमान रूप में स्थापित करने के लिए क्रमशः पहले इंद्र को परास्त किया और त्रिलोधिपति बन गया। इसके बाद उसने विष्णु लोक पर आक्रमण किया।
जलंधर ने विष्णु को परास्त कर देवी लक्ष्मी को विष्णु से छीन लेने की योजना बनाई। इसके चलते उसने बैकुंठ पर आक्रमण कर दिया। लेकिन देवी लक्ष्मी ने जलंधर से कहा कि हम दोनों ही जल से उत्पन्न हुए हैं इसलिए हम भाई-बहन हैं। देवी लक्ष्मी की बातों से जलंधर प्रभावित हुआ और लक्ष्मी को बहन मानकर बैकुंठ से चला गया।
इसके बाद उसने कैलाश पर आक्रमण करने की योजना बनाई और अपने सभी असुरों को इकट्ठा किया और कैलाश जाकर देवी पार्वती को पत्नी बनाने के लिए प्रयास करने लगा। इससे देवी पार्वती क्रोधित हो गईं और तब महादेव को जलंधर से युद्घ करना पड़ा। लेकिन वृंदा के सतीत्व के कारण भगवान शिव का हर प्रहार जलंधर निष्फल कर देता था।
अंत में देवताओं ने मिलकर योजना बनाई और भगवान विष्णु जलंधर का वेष धारण करके वृंदा के पास पहुंच गए। वृंदा भगवान विष्णु को अपना पति जलंधर समझकर उनके साथ पत्नी के समान व्यवहार करने लगी। इससे वृंदा का पतिव्रत धर्म टूट गया और शिव ने जलंधर का वध कर दिया।
विष्णु द्वारा सतीत्व भंग किए जाने पर वृंदा ने आत्मदाह कर लिया, तब उसकी राख के ऊपर तुलसी का एक पौधा जन्म। तुलसी देवी वृंदा का ही स्वरूप है जिसे भगवान विष्णु लक्ष्मी से भी अधिक प्रिय मानते हैं।
भारत के पंजाब प्रांत में वर्तमान जालंधर नगर जलंधर के नाम पर ही है। जालंधर में आज भी असुरराज जलंधर की पत्नी देवी वृंदा का मंदिर मोहल्ला कोट किशनचंद में स्थित है। मान्यता है कि यहां एक प्राचीन गुफा थी, जो सीधी हरिद्वार तक जाती थी। माना जाता है कि प्राचीनकाल में इस नगर के आसपास 12 तालाब हुआ करते थे। नगर में जाने के लिए नाव का सहारा लेना पड़ता था।
अयप्पा: भगवान अयप्पा के पिता शिव और माता मोहिनी हैं। विष्णु का मोहिनी रूप देखकर भगवान शिव का वीर्यपात हो गया था। उनके वीर्य को पारद कहा गया और उनके वीर्य से ही बाद में सस्तव नामक पुत्र का जन्म का हुआ जिन्हें दक्षिण भारत में अयप्पा कहा गया। शिव और विष्णु से उत्पन होने के कारण उनको हरिहरपुत्र कहा जाता है।
भारतीय राज्य केरल में शबरीमलई में अयप्पा स्वामी का प्रसिद्ध मंदिर है, जहां विश्वभर से लोग शिव के इस पुत्र के मंदिर में दर्शन करने के लिए आते हैं। इस मंदिर के पास मकर संक्रांति की रात घने अंधेरे में रह-रहकर यहां एक ज्योति दिखती है। इस ज्योति के दर्शन के लिए दुनियाभर से करोड़ों श्रद्धालु हर साल आते हैं।
भूमा: एक समय जब कैलाश पर्वत पर भगवान शिव समाधि में ध्यान लगाये बैठे थे, उस समय उनके ललाट से तीन पसीने की बूंदें पृथ्वी पर गिरीं। इन बूंदों से पृथ्वी ने एक सुंदर और प्यारे बालक को जन्म दिया, जिसके चार भुजाएं थीं और वय रक्त वर्ण का था। इस पुत्र को पृथ्वी ने पालन पोषण करना शुरु किया। तभी भूमि का पुत्र होने के कारण यह भौम कहलाया। कुछ बड़ा होने पर मंगल काशी पहुंचा और भगवान शिव की कड़ी तपस्या की। तब भगवान शिव ने प्रसन्न होकर उसे मंगल लोक प्रदान किया।
