अमेरिका के राष्ट्रपति डोनाल्ड ट्रम्प ने कहा कि वह इस बात से काफी हैरान हैं कि उनके डेमोक्रेटिक प्रतिद्वंद्वी जो बाइडेन ने भारतीय मूल की सीनेटर कमला हैरिस को उप राष्ट्रपति पद का उम्मीदवार (अपना रनिंग मेट) चुना है जबकि वह लगातार उनका ‘‘अनादर’’ करती रही हैं।बाइडेन ने मंगलवार को भारतीय मूल की सीनेटर कमला हैरिस को उप राष्ट्रपति पद का उम्मीदवार (अपना रनिंग मेट) चुना। ऐसा पहली बार हुआ है, जब कोई अश्वेत महिला देश की किसी बड़ी पार्टी की ओर से उपराष्ट्रपति पद का उम्मीदवार बनी हैं।

ट्रम्प ने व्हाइट हाउस में एक संवाददाता सम्मेलन में कहा, ‘‘हम देखेंगे वह कैसे काम करती हैं। उन्होंने प्राइमरी में बेहद खराब प्रदर्शन किया था। उनके बेहतर प्रदर्शन की उम्मीद थी।’’उन्होंने कहा, ‘‘वह कई चीजों को लेकर चर्चा में थीं, इसलिए मुझे बाइडेन द्वारा उनका चयन करने पर थोड़ा अचम्भा हो रहा है।’’ट्रम्प ने एक सवाल के जवाब में कहा, ‘‘इतना अनादर करने वाले व्यक्ति का चयन करना कठिन काम है। डेमोक्रेट प्राइमरी डिबेट के दौरान उन्होंने बाइडेन के बारे बेहद खराब बातें कहीं। मुझे लगा था कि वह उनका चयन नहीं करेंगे।’’वहीं उप राष्ट्रपति माइक पेंस का कहना है कि उन्हें हैरिस के चयन से कोई हैरानी नहीं हुई है। उन्होंने कहा, ‘‘जैसा आप सभी को पता है कि कट्टरपंथी वाम बाइडेन और डेमोक्रेट पर हावी हो गए हैं। इसलिए उच्च कर, खुली सीमाओं, मांग पर गर्भपात आदि उनके वादों को देखते हुए, इसमें कोई आश्चर्य की बात नहीं है कि उन्होंने सीनेटर हैरिस को चुना है।’पेंस और हैरिस के बीच सात अक्टूबर को उप राष्ट्रपति के पद के लिए डिबेट होगी।
