आस्ट्रेलिया के टेस्ट टीम के कप्तान टिम पेन ने ब्रिसबेन में हुई एक प्रेस कांफ्रेंस में कहा, ‘‘मेरा अनुमान है कि भारत आसानी से जीत जायेगा बशर्ते वे अपना सर्वश्रेष्ठ प्रदर्शन करें।’’ पेन ने न्यूजीलैंड और भारत दोनों के खिलाफ आस्ट्रेलिया की कप्तानी की है। उन्होंने 2019 में न्यूजीलैंड को 3.0 से हराया जबकि 2020 में भारत के हाथों 1.2 से पराजय का सामना किया।
न्यूजीलैंड की टीम ने फाइनल से पहले इंग्लैंड को टेस्ट श्रृंखला में 1.0 से हराया है लेकिन पेन का कहना है कि प्रमुख खिलाड़ियों के बिना उतरी इंग्लैंड टीम पर मिली जीत कोई मायने नहीं रखती। इंग्लैंड टीम में बेन स्टोक्स, क्रिस वोक्स, मोइन अली, जोस बटलर, जोफ्रा आर्चर और विकेटकीपर बेन फोक्स नहीं थे।
पेन ने कहा, ‘‘न्यूजीलैंड की टीम अच्छी है लेकिन इंग्लैंड की यह सर्वश्रेष्ठ टीम नहीं थी। एशेज में हमें उनकी सर्वश्रेष्ठ टीम देखने को मिलेगी।’’
