शब्द आकाश का गुण है और आकाश तत्व में जीवन शक्ति का वास्तव्य होता है। मेद प्रणाली और ग्रंथियों का पोषण आसमानी रंग के रश्मि-किरणों द्वारा होता है। रोलंड हंट के मतानुसार गले की सर्व जाति की बीमारियाँ स्वरनलिका की सूजन, आवाज का बैठना, टाईफार्डड, कॉलरा, गाठियाँ प्लेग, हिस्टिरिया, हृदय की धड़कन, संधिवात, वमन, जुलाब, तृष्णा, अतिसार, पीलिया, पित्तका बढ़ना, अंतडियों की सूजन, आँख, दांत और सिर का दर्द, मज्जातंतु की व्याधियाँ, नींदका न आना, आघात इत्यादि रोग पुखराज से आवर्तित होने वाले आसमानी रश्मि-किरणों से अच्छे हो जाते हैं। औषधी गुण आयुर्वेद की दृष्टि से पुखराज वात, पीत, खांसी, अजीर्णता, आम्लवात, वांती इत्यादि रोगों पर लाभदायक है और पीलिया, कुष्ठरोग, चमड़ी के रोगों का शत्रू है।
इसके धारण करने से पागलपन दूर हो जाता है। निद्रानाशके लिए! पुखराज सर्वोत्तम माना जाता है। यह क्रोध विनाशक और बुद्धिवर्धक है। गर्भवती स्त्रियों को सुलभ प्रसूति के लिए सहायक माना गया है। दैवी शक्ति इसके धारण करने से वंशवृद्धि होती है। जिस कुमारी कन्या के विवाह में बाधा उत्पन्न होती हो, ऐसी कन्याओं को वर प्राप्ति में सहाय करता है। पति – पत्नी में प्रेमभाव उत्पन्न करता है। चारित्र्य पतन से परावृत्त करता है। आकस्मिक मृत्युकी आशंका दूर करता है।
स्त्रियों के लिए गुरु ग्रह पतिकारक माना गया है। इसलिए सौभाग्यवती स्त्रियों को श्वेत पुखराज धारण करना चाहिए। चीन के लोग पुखराज का विशेष आदर करते हैं। ज्योतिष की नजर से पुखराज एक ऐसा रत्न जो कभी किसी को हानि नही पहुंचाता। इसलिए यह रत्न हर कोई व्यक्ति पहन सकता है। परंतु पुखराज अधिकांश साफ, निर्मल, बेदाग नहीं पाये जाते। इनमें जीरम् वगैरेह का होना प्राकृतिक है। इसलिए ऐसा रत्न धारण करने से कोई नुकसान नहीं होता और प्रभाव में अंतर नहीं पड़ता। जिस व्यक्ति की कुंडली में गुरु ग्रह शुभ भावदर्शक हो और गुरुस्वामी ग्रहों को धन और मिथुन राशि वाले व्यक्ति को पुखराज रत्न अधिक लाभदायक है। कम से कम एक कॅरेट तौल का पुखराज रत्न बृहस्पतिवार को या पुष्यनक्षत्र के दिन सूर्योदय से सूर्यास्त तक सोना या चांदी में जड़वाकर तर्जनी में धारण करना लाभदायक है। जहाँ तक हो सके पुखराज रत्न हलके पीत या श्वेत रंग का धारण करना अधिक फायदेमंद है। जिस व्यक्ति को पुखराज धारण करना साध्य नहीं, वह बदल रत्न वैक्रांत धारण कर सकते हैं। वैक्रांत का प्रभाव पुखराज रत्न के जैसा ही होता है।
कुछ मान्यताएँ ऐसी हैं कि वैक्रांत रत्न पुखराज की तुलना में अधिक लाभदायक है और वैक्रांत रत्न प्राय: निर्मल, दोषरहित होते हैं। वैक्रांत खरीदने में असमर्थ लोग सुनेला (पीतस्फटिक) यह सौभाग्य प्रभाव का रत्न धारण कर सकते हैं। धारण करते समय यह मंत्र पढना शुभ है।
