ब्रिटेन में कोरोना वायरस महामारी पर काबू पाने के लिए लागू किए गए लॉकडाउन के चलते दूसरी तिमाही में जीडीपी में 20.4 प्रतिशत की कमी आई, जिसके साथ ही अर्थव्यवस्था आधिकारिक रूप से मंदी की चपेट में आ गई है। ब्रिटेन में लगातार दो तिमाही के दौरान नकारात्मक विकास दर होने पर अर्थव्यवस्था को आधिकारिक रूप से मंदी की चपेट में माना जाता है।

राष्ट्रीय सांख्यिकी कार्यालय के आंकड़ों के मुताबिक वर्ष 2020 की पहली तिमाही में अर्थव्यवस्था 2.2 प्रतिशत घटी थी। दूसरे देशों के विपरीत ब्रिटेन की सांख्यिकी एजेंसी तिमाही आंकड़ों के साथ ही मासिक आंकड़े भी जारी करती है और इन आंकड़ों से पता चलता है कि अर्थव्यवस्था में सुधार की उम्मीद दिख रही है।

ब्रिटेन की अर्थव्यवस्था जून में गैर-मूलभूत वस्तुओं की दुकानों को फिर से खोलने की इजाजत देने के बाद 8.7 प्रतिशत की दर से बढ़ी। ब्रिटेन की सरकार को उम्मीद है कि अर्थव्यवस्था को खोलने और कामकाज को आसान बनाने के चलते आगे सुधार होगा।
