टीएमसी के संस्थापक सदस्यों में से एक और पश्चिम बंगाल की राजनीति में एक प्रमुख चेहरा मुकुल रॉय ने अपनी पार्टी छोड़ दी और 2017 में प्रतिद्वंद्वी भारतीय जनता पार्टी (भाजपा) में शामिल हो गए। उन्होंने इस साल का विधानसभा चुनाव कृष्णानगर उत्तर निर्वाचन क्षेत्र से भाजपा के साथ लड़ा था। और जीत गए। हालांकि, भाजपा चुनाव जीतने और पश्चिम बंगाल में सरकार बनाने में विफल रही।
11 जून को, मुकुल रॉय पार्टी सुप्रीमो और मुख्यमंत्री ममता बनर्जी के साथ टीएमसी में लौट आए और इस पल को “परिवार के लड़के की घर वापसी” के रूप में वर्णित किया और आरोप लगाया कि भाजपा ने किसी को भी सम्मान और शांति से जीने की अनुमति नहीं दी।
बीजेपी ने कई मौकों पर रॉय को जहाज कूदने के लिए बदनाम किया है। बंगाल में विपक्ष के नेता सुवेंदु अधिकारी, एक पूर्व टीएमसी नेता और ममता बनर्जी के करीबी सहयोगी ने 18 जून को अध्यक्ष को एक याचिका भेजी थी, जिसमें राय को कृष्णानगर उत्तर निर्वाचन क्षेत्र से विधायक के रूप में अयोग्य घोषित करने की मांग की गई थी।
जुलाई में पश्चिम बंगाल विधानसभा की लोक लेखा समिति (पीएसी) के अध्यक्ष के रूप में रॉय की नियुक्ति ने भी भाजपा की तीखी आलोचना की, भगवा पार्टी के आठ विधायकों ने राज्य में विभिन्न विधानसभा पैनलों के प्रमुख के रूप में इस्तीफा दे दिया। भाजपा ने पिछले महीने कलकत्ता उच्च न्यायालय को यह भी बताया कि पीएसी अध्यक्ष के रूप में रॉय की नियुक्ति विपक्षी पार्टी के एक विधायक को पद पाने की 50 साल पुरानी परंपरा का उल्लंघन है।
